When the Label Becomes Your Identity: You Are More Than Your Worst Pattern
"Character defect" is one of those recovery phrases that can sound honest while keeping people stuck. This episode looks at how patterns like control, anger, avoidance, dishonesty, and people-pleasing are shaped by addiction, attachment wounds, trauma, nervous system conditioning, and reinforcement. It also explores why this language may have been useful shorthand for people in early sobriety who were simply trying to survive the next fifteen minutes.
This episode focuses on accountability without self-attack. It examines cues, payoff, cost, craving, identity, prayer, Buddhist ideas about conditioned behavior, and the practice required to respond differently under pressure. The goal is to understand the pattern clearly enough to change it without reducing an entire life to its worst chapter.
