“This Always Happens to Me”: Anatomy of a Self-Fulfilling Prophecy
A self-fulfilling prophecy happens when an expectation changes how we enter a situation, our behavior affects the other person, and their response becomes evidence that the original belief was correct. This episode looks at how that cycle develops through confirmation bias, threat prediction, trauma, abandonment fears, distrust, and previous experiences with relationships or authority.
The same pattern can show up in intimate relationships, recovery, parenting, work, and everyday conflict. When the nervous system starts reacting to what the present situation reminds us of, old expectations can shape tone, posture, interpretation, reassurance-seeking, withdrawal, criticism, and defensiveness in ways that help produce the outcome we feared.
