Moving Lights Don’t Fix Trauma: A No-BS Explanation of EMDR
EMDR is often reduced to following a light while bilateral stimulation “unlocks” trauma. In this episode, Brian explains what EMDR actually involves, what researchers still debate about its mechanism, and why Francine Shapiro later said she would have called it “Reprocessing Therapy.” The discussion covers the Adaptive Information Processing model, avoidance, target selection, negative core beliefs, dual attention, and the role bilateral stimulation may play.
Brian also looks at the clinical skill required for effective EMDR, including preparation, pacing, attention to dissociation, tracking whether processing is moving or looping, and using cognitive interweaves when a client becomes stuck. The episode offers a practical explanation of how EMDR can help people process painful memories, remain grounded in the present, and develop healthier beliefs about themselves.
